Unterholz OVERVIEW
In Unterholz, set near the end of the 15th century in medieval Pomerania, players are drawn into a dark and mysterious world. The setting of the game is a deserted settlement encircled by a hazy, unsettling marsh. You experience a psychological torture that challenges not only your understanding of the outside world but also your internal problems as you explore the ruins & shadowy corners of the abandoned location, learning about the horrible fate of its people.
Sword fighting and puzzles are combined in this brief but moody experience. Finding the truth behind the village’s disappearance and the evil powers that caused it is the primary objective. You can explore the game at your own speed, and as you navigate the world, the plot develops organically. There’s no strict path to follow, and much of the narrative is told through environmental storytelling, letting players piece together the mystery in their own way.
Unterholz focuses on immersion, with minimal interruption from menus or loading screens. The gameplay is seamless allowing you to stay fully engaged with the world. Whether you’re checking your inventory or reading documents, everything feels natural and integrated. The sound design & music are carefully crafted to evoke the right moods, guiding you through the journey with atmospheric tunes and subtle audio cues.
The goal of the game’s development, which took up around two years of my own time, was to create a realistic and intricate universe. The in-game documents are one of the most notable aspects; they are based on real medieval writings from Pomerania in the fifteenth century. These documents were translated into Early Modern High German with the help of a linguist friend, and I used a traditional typeface to make them feel authentic. You can inspect these texts closely in the game adding depth to the experience.
While historical accuracy was a priority, I also mixed elements from different time periods to create specific effects. For instance, the protagonist’s armor is a decorative style that wasn’t typically used in battle but is meant to romanticize knights in a way that reflects how they were depicted in Renaissance art. Unterholz plays with the classic image of chivalrous knights, contrasting it with the darker, more tragic events unfolding in the game.
Professional actors bring the characters to life in the completely voice-acted game. Their hidden significance not only helps to resolve the plot but also clarifies the game’s enigmatic occurrences.
The game also comes with the entire music as a bonus. The music was developed alongside the game and enhances the atmosphere, with some tracks composed even before the project officially started.
